Mum, dad, kids and the dog are happy with the roof windows
Meet the Birk Rasmussen family

They live in a traditional detached house in Dragør, which people like to say has 800,000 "siblings" in Denmark. Currently, many single-storey detached houses are being renovated as new families with children move in. A challenge with this house type, however, is that the low recessed ceilings and lack of natural light don't match the desire for a bright and functional home. The detached house in Dragør was also dark until Christian and Cecilie decided to install five electrically operated roof windows with additional sun protection. One in the children's room, two connecting windows in the living room and one in the kitchen.

No more fried-food smell

There are many good reasons to have roof windows in the kitchen. Today, the Birk Rasmussen family has optimal working light when cooking, both in their daily life and for small and large occasions. More often than not, the lights don't have to be turned on during the day because natural light streams in from the roof window.

If the meatballs burn or the smell of cooking lingers in the kitchen, the air can be recirculated easily and efficiently in a few minutes. If the roof window and a facade window are opened at the same time, you get the benefit of the "chimney effect", which pushes the hot air out through the roof window.

Space for playing

The family's two youngest kids sleep in a bunk bed in the small children's room. The challenge was that the facade window did not let in much natural light, which made the room appear dark and cave-like. A VELUX roof window helps create a feeling of greater space and ensures a good indoor climate when the children are asleep — or if the playing gets rowdy.

"Once the roof window in the children's room was installed, the room seemed almost twice as big, much brighter, and generally a more comfortable room to be in.""

The benefits of roof windows in a detached house

1. Natural light throughout the home
A classic Danish detached house cries out for natural light. The challenge is to bring natural light far enough into the rooms, which often appear dark. Roof windows make it possible to bring natural light into areas of the home that are otherwise dependent on lights.

2. A home with high ceilings
The detached house is, among other things, characterised by low, recessed ceilings. By tilting the ceiling or establishing a light shaft, a unique feeling of space is achieved which makes the house feel larger than it really is.

3. Roof windows help detached house prices rise
When detached house owners install roof windows in the roof, it doesn't just provide more natural light, but also a better indoor climate and greater comfort. A survey from 2018 conducted by Boligsiden.dk shows that the sale price of a detached house increases on average by DKK 107,853 after adding roof windows.
