A jewel combining the old and the new

Demolish and rebuild or preserve and renovate? Not an easy decision, because building from scratch is not always the best choice. It is often worthwhile to preserve the existing building and adapt it to the requirements of contemporary and modern living. The Herr family's house is a wonderful example of this: with the help of Missfeldt Krass Architects, the house from the 1930s was turned into a light-flooded jewel with additional living space for the whole family.

"Now the house can grow old with us."

"We decided on a lot of roof windows in the house, which means we can open the roof windows in the summer in the evening when it's very hot and then feel that the entire roof is open and the whole place can be completely ventilated", explains Oliver Herr.

Modern floor plan with lots of air and light

Thanks to the living space added by the extension, the spatial structure of the existing building could largely be preserved, although some walls had to be demolished - also to create the transition to the extension. The ground floor now offers space for a generous kitchen and a nice dining area. The guest toilet, study and even a small storage room are also located on the ground floor. The old staircase leads from the hall to the attic.
