What can you do?

Many of us have left the office and brought our laptops home. While some of us have found this shift to remote working challenging, several studies have concluded that working from a home office is in many ways ideal, creating a more personalised, productive, and healthy working environment.

For those of you who want to setup or even optimize the space of your home office, there are a handful of concrete things you can do. We have put together a list of the most pressing issues when seeking to create the best possible working environment within the comfort of your own home.

Embrace natural light in your home office

There is no longer any doubt about it: in terms of productivity in the workplace, natural light versus artificial light is the clear winner! Daylight floods our systems with serotonin, which improves our mood and ability to concentrate, and it gets rid of pesky shadows that force our eyes to work overtime, resulting in strain and exhaustion. Studies have shown that in 4 out of 10 workplaces that are illuminated primarily by daylight, employees demonstrate an increased productivity of 30-40%.

Increasing the amount of daylight in your home office does not have to be a headache, and it is essential to creating the healthiest and most productive environment you can. The first step is moving your desk as close to the window as possible and orient it parallel to the glass. Remove any objects that might be obstructing the light and be sure to open your curtains or blinds all the way!

Another smart idea is to add a VELUX roof window to the room. Roof windows bring in twice the daylight as vertical windows and allow the light to penetrate much farther into the room. Roof windows also improve ventilation and contribute to a healthy indoor climate, so you can breathe deep and think hard without feeling exhausted in your home office.

Accessorise wisely

When you are sitting in front of a computer all day long, it is important to minimise glare so you can actually see your screen. But a dark room without daylight is no good for your brain. That is why we recommend investing in VELUX blinds that block some of the brightness while still allowing daylight and fresh air into the room. That means, you will be able to see the task at hand while allowing yourself to receive the benefits of the outside, keeping your brain as sharp as your eyes.

Keep your home office clean

Clutter is the enemy of good ideas. Do not underestimate the visual distraction that can result from the glut of papers, notes, working documents, and cords that often pollute an office space. Try to invest in smart storage ideas, from wall-hanging magazine racks to decorative boxes and lots of drawers, so that you can keep your desk as organized and knick-knack-free as possible. Our brains need space to do their work: so, help them out by hiding the mess away, out of sight.

Did you know

The VELUX ACTIVE monitor does all the work for you by detecting CO2 and air particles in the room and automatically opening and closing your roof windows to maintain a healthy indoor climate.

Think ergonomic: Buy smart

It may be tempting to transform your office into a Pinterest-perfect photo - but showing off to an audience is not the point of a home office. Instead, try to invest in products that can best support your body and mind throughout the long working hours of a day. When it comes to your office chair, pay attention to back, thigh and arm support. A good one should be soft but also supportive, and lifts to adjust height are also be a good idea. Also, invest in a desk that is the right height for you. Keep in mind that the top of your computer screen should be at eye level, or a touch below, to reduce eye fatigue and eliminate neck strain. Your keyboard should allow your forearms to be parallel to the floor, so this is not the time to splurge on that tiny antique table you have been eyeing for a year.

Air it out

A stuffy home office will make sure you get nothing done, so be sure to let the fresh air in! You might be busy, but do not forget to keep the windows open while you work, allowing your brain to be flooded with oxygen so that you can stay focused for longer. You might look into the VELUX ACTIVE monitor, which does all the work for you by detecting CO2 and air particles in the room and automatically opening and closing your roof windows to maintain a healthy indoor climate.
