Get off on the right foot!

We all deserve a home full of natural light and obtaining the many benefits of roof windows is much simpler than it may seem. Roof windows bring much-needed natural air flow and a flood of daylight into any space, creating a healthy indoor climate that helps us to be our best selves.

Most importantly, getting roof windows installed does not need to be difficult, and it does not need to break the bank either: it just takes a little imagination and a bit of planning. To show you what we mean, we have put together a guide of six tips that can help you get off on the right foot, avoid complications during the process, and finish strong.

Decide what you want from your roof window

Before you get into the logistics of planning to install a roof window, it is smart to take stock of what you want this roof window to do. This will help you determine the scope of the project and, later down the line, select the right roof window to suit your needs.

1. Evaluate your space

Keep in mind that we use different rooms in our home for different activities and achieving the ideal amount and type of daylight for each space can greatly improve our enjoyment. Living spaces where we spend a lot of time, like living rooms, can benefit from plenty of daylight across the whole space. Bedrooms, meanwhile, are ideally equipped with roof windows that can open and close with the click of a button, bringing fresh air into the room and ensuring a good night’s rest.

2. Study the sun

When planning to install roof windows in your home, it is important to consider the orientation of windows and rooms in relation to the source of light, as this influences the availability and qualities of daylight.

Note that in the northern hemisphere, daylight coming in from the north provides a stable, functional light throughout the day. Light coming from south, east, and west, however, will likely flood the interior with direct light at a certain time of day, like sunrise, sunset, or high noon.

Thus, grab your smartphone, enter the compass app and choose which orientation you would like to put your roof windows in!

3. Check for obstructions

The operation of your roof window in the room might also be worth considering. Roof windows operated by a bottom handlebar (Top-hung) are great at providing a beautiful view but require that you can stand directly under them and reach them to open. Roof windows placed above furniture, meanwhile, should have a top handlebar (Centre pivot), whose control bar at the top allows for things to be placed under the roof window without obstructing it when it opens. For a “smart home”, add VELUX ACTIVE that uses sensors to continuously monitor the temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels in your home - opening or closing your roof windows accordingly.
